A STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF DEVELOPMENT PSYCHOLOGY ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the Study

Science according to the new standard Encyclopedia, science can be define as the systematic and unbiased study of the world include everything that can be or detected in nature.

More so, Advance Learners define sciences as knowledge arranged in an orderly manner, especially knowledge obtained by observation and testing of facts, pursuit of such knowledge, scientists try to understand, explain and predict the way in which everything in the world behaves or acts.

The present trends of development is towards technical advancement and this cannot be achieved without due consideration to the status of sciences teaching in our secondary school. In this case, it becomes necessary to provide students who are just fresh from the junior secondary school (JSS) and still young in age, with the essential and basic tools in term of knowledge and still which will enable them adapt a d make meaningful contribution to the society in which they find themselves. To this end therefore, Biology has to be taught in our Senior Secondary School (SSS), because Biology is the study of life.

Moreover, since the society is not static but dynamic, it becomes necessary to equip the individual with a form of knowledge that will enable him make meaningful contribution to the society which he/she live.

But before this can be achieve, there are fundamental issues which must be taken into consideration, one is the correlation between availability of instrumental, materials and students performance in the school certificate examination which the teacher uses to achieve the specific objectives of his other lesson.

  • Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to survey the correlation between availability of well equipped biological laboratory and student performance in senior secondary school certificate examination in selected school in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

This will help us to find the relationship between student’s performance in Biology and the quality of biological laboratory for the effective teaching and learning Biology.

This study will also find out if there are problems involves in correlation between biological laboratory available and students performance in the school certificate examination.

This will help us to find out laboratory equipment are those essential facilities in Biology and Apparatus, human and physical that are needed for the efficient and affixture operation administration and main maintenance of practical work in diary Biology Laboratory and in any educational institution.

  • Statement of the Problem

There are inadequate instructional materials methods for Biology laboratory in the secondary school in the Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

A number of factors are likely to be responsible for the poor performance of the secondary school student in the final examinations nearly every year.

These factors are worth studying. The impact of laboratory equipment on students likely performance in the SSCE with a view of making the teaching learning process in Ekiti State and in Nigeria Secondary Schools more result yielding. This paper is the therefore designed to:

  1. examine whether the supply of facilities for effective learning will be a necessary criteria for the achievement of standard.
  2. determine whether school adequate laboratory equipment in Biology do perform better in SSCE than schools lacking resources.
  3. find out whether there are inadequate provisions of laboratory equipment in Biology in Secondary School in Ekiti State.
    • Research Hypothesis

The research hypotheses tested in this study are as follow:

  1. There is significant correlation between the available equipment or instructional materials and performance of student in the school, certificate examination in government and private schools in Ikere Local Government Area.
  2. To what extent does the attitude of the Biology teacher towards the condition of practical affect student performance in the school certificate Biology examination nation?
  3. Do schools with well-equipped Biology laboratory have better Biology school certificate result than schools with unequipped Biology laboratories?

1.4     Significance of the Study

Then we study the significant of this particular topic the student we be able to carry out some experiment and practical work, if the laboratory is well equipped or instructional materials is provide, also the work may easily for the teacher during teaching the student in practical  aspect in the laboratory. If there is adequate provision of laboratory equipment student we be able to perform well in their senior secondary certificate examination (SSCE). This is necessary because Biology forms the bedrock for the study of course like Medicine, Pharmacy, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology e.t.c in higher institution.

1.5     Scope of the Study

The research work covers five (5) selected secondary schools in Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State

There long established schools and two new by established schools. The result obtained from the study can be applied to other schools in that area.

1.6     Limitation of the Study

The intention of this researcher was to supply the correlation between available well equipped Biology laboratory and study performance of Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) in selected schools Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
