ABSTRACT
This research work aims at
investigating the role of electronic media in the teaching of English language
in Nigerian secondary schools with a case study of some selected secondary
schools in Ado local Government Area of Ekiti State. The purpose of the study
is to find out the role of Electronic media in the teaching of English language
in Nigerian secondary schools. Two sets of questionnaires were administered to
obtain information or relevant areas, one set for teachers and another set for
the students to determine whether the role of media in senior secondary schools
has any prospect for the future, as well as identifying specific problems
encountered by teachers and students in the process of learning English
language in secondary schools. Students perform woefully in English language as
a result of inadequate provision of electronic media. Electronic media play
vital roles in the teaching and learning of English language. Some of these
roles are as follows:  it facilitate
learning and give room for students and teachers interaction. It develops the
good use of English language to students and also leads to success of students’
academic performance in English language.
The researcher adopted random sampling
technique in each of the schools selected in senior secondary schools as sample
for the project. Five senior secondary schools were selected, forty students
per school and two hundred students in all the five schools.
                                        CHAPTER I
                                     INTRODUCTION                        Background of the Study
The role of media in
teaching and learning of English language combining academic study with the
design and development of materials enables the students to develop their
theoretical understanding of core language in teaching and learning issues and
enhance analytical and investigation skills. Teaching English to speakers of
other languages requires more than just an understanding of the grammar or
perfect pronunciation. Using specific methods and appropriate media, English
teachers can better interact with their students and help them achieve their
language goals. An effective English language teacher must serve as a model for
his/her students to emulate. To be good model, a teacher must be embedded with
the qualities in language skills such as reading, writing, speaking and
listening.
Electronic media are media
that use electronics or electromechanical energy for the end users to access
the content. Is the usage of medium, uses the application of phenomena of
electronic via, radio and television are suggested in the study as a way of
improving the teaching of English language in secondary schools? Since English
language is inclusive in the syllabus and even made compulsory for all students
its role cannot be overemphasized. Language has been a sort of limited lingua
franca among educated people in Nigeria. English language has acquired the
states of an official language in Nigeria and as not only bridged the
communication gap among different ethnics
groups but also as medium of communication among literates of different
linguistic groups. Through the use of English language Hausa indigene could
discuss with Yoruba indigene without any obstruction.
It is require of all
learners to be thoroughly versed in English and also an important requirement
for award or certificate admission into higher institution. From the time
immemorial, there been poor performance of student s in English language that could
be traced back to many factors such as;
a)
Non-availability
aids.
b)
Inadequacy
of professionally trained English teachers.

c)
Exposure
of poor standard of language.

d)
Inability
to write legible and speak good English as expected among the students.
The advance technology in
Nigeria has giving room to rapid increase in the numbers of television and radio
station. In view of this, many researches   are being carried out in some states in
Nigeria to know the effect of mass media in our society. This study was carried
out to the extent to wish television and radio influence the teaching of
English language in Nigeria secondary schools, particularly in Ado Local
Government Area of Ekiti State. However the development of mass media such as
television, newspaper and radio e.t.c. have contributed immensely to the
teaching of English language and the students spent a greater percentage of
their time listening to radio broadcast, watching important and educative
programs on the television. These media were, designed to entertain, educate,
broaden people’s outlook and offer new ways of learning and self expression. In
essence, the important of media such as television and radio to the teaching of
English language cannot be treated with levity hand since students academic
performance are largely depended on the amount or resources made available for
teaching the subject.
Media: This is a mean of transmitting the
message, thought, opinion, and view point. In the beginning man used horse and
other animal to send the message to the receiver. It took time to deliver the
message and the probability of spoiling the message was on the top. Now men
have entered the age of science and technology. They have explored the farther
space. They have got a tremendous achievement in many field as well as media.
There are two types of media; print media and electronic media.
Print
Media:
The
industry associated with the printing and distribution of news through
newspapers and magazines. Print media are still forming an important part of
media industry. Basically said, words printed with ink on paper that is
attached in different ways, provides different kinds of information, education,
and entertainment. They consist of cover, chapters or themes, pictures,
advertising and so on and mostly emphasis is made on make-up. Print media
include all printed forms of press: newspaper, newsletters, booklets, magazines
posters and pamphlets as other printed publication such as books and printed
literature.
