The study investigated the effective
utilization of instructional materials in the teaching of geography in some
selected senior secondary schools of Ilorin

The sample involved 40 teachers and 152
students totaling 192 drawn from the eight selected schools in Ilorin East
Local Government Area of Kwara state.

main instruments used for the investigation were; a questionnaire based on the
investigation into the various problems faced in the availability, adequacy and
effective usage of geography instructional resources in the schools and the results of the students that offered
geography in the WAEC SSCE examinations from 2005-2009. To show the performance

Finding reveals that students perform poorly
in the SSCE examinations due to lack of adequate teaching materials like textbooks,
libraries, maps, field and laboratory equipments like thermometers, rain gauge
etc and as well as lack of excursions and field trips.

Government should make specific funds
available for the schools for the purchase of some instructional materials and
teaching aids that is very relevant in the teaching of geography. The need for
periodic excursions and field work should be included in the geography senior
secondary school curriculum so that the students will be familiar with the
geography around them.
