TEACHER’S ATTITUDE AND STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN ECONOMICS IN EKITI STATE
ABSTRACT
This study was planned to look into
the Relationship Between Teachers Attitude and Students Academic Performance in
Economics in Ekiti
State with particular
reference to Gbonyin Local Government.
In order to achieve the objective of
this study a structured questionnaire was used and distributed to two hundred
(200) respondents on the relationship between teachers attitude and students
academic performances in Economics.
The data were analyzed with the use
of percentage techniques on the relationship between teachers attitude and
students academic performance in this said area.
The study revealed that teachers
attitude has positive influence on students academic performance and the
members of the community at large. It was observed that, financial assistance
is open to members which contributes immensely to the welfare of members.
Based on the findings of this study
some recommendations were made in order to solve the problems of teacher’s and
students in the local government.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1           
Background to the Study
The knowledge of Economics is very
important in all aspect of human life. 
This has been emphasized in the Nigeria school curriculum.  This is also evident in the National Policy
on Education, Federal Ministry of Education (FME) 1981, that Economics is among
the important subjects in Nigeria
education system.  The study of Economics
will bring about self reliance and Economics development of any nation.  Emphasis is being laid on Economics because
of its key role in the study of human behaviours and the study of the economy
of the world.
Apparently, no nation can develop
economically without emphasis on the study of Economics as a course in the
secondary and tertiary institutions.
For a nation to develop, it must
understand the importance of study economics. 
Economics is one of the important subjects which form a bedrock of
secondary school curriculum.  In
secondary school today economics is among the important subjects in West
African school certificate examination. 
Although their performance after the examination is not encouraging.
Environment according to Horby (1993)
means “surroundings, circumstances influence”. 
He also defined impact as the force of an idea or invention or system?
Therefore environmental factors
according to Owolabi (1999) means, the home, school, teachers methodology.  Home background such as the socio – economic
status of the family will dictate to a large extent how well to the students
perform to a academics.  This is to say
that enriched environment will foster learning while impoverished environment
will impede learning.

Statement of Problem
The problem under study is linked
with the unsatisfactory state of affairs in the Nigeria educational system.  The establishment of special schools,
government schools and community schools has resulted in the provision of
(Economics) facilities than others.
The environment varies from schools
to school.  It has not been very possible
to reconcile school educational facilities to school environments.  In addition, it is not certain whether the
government has adequate information on the actual relationship between teachers
attitude and students academic performance in Economics which forms the need
for this study.

Purpose of the Study
This is designed to investigate the relationship
between teachers attitude and students academic performance in Economics in
senior secondary certificate Examination. The study specially is to find out
how, professionally qualified and experienced economics teachers, good
equipment, adequate school building and furniture, good library and suitable
textbook, good administrative management as well as location influences
students performance.

Significance of the Study
The knowledge of the study will open
up immense advantage or school and society as it will help the university
curriculum designers to become award of the strengths and weakness in their
programme for aspiring teachers especially Economics teachers to know when the
restructure or modify the university curriculum in order to suit the every
growing needs of the society.
Make secondary school teachers become
aware of the need to relate classroom learning to their environment and day to
day living and also of the importance of field trip to understanding situation
and thereby make some suggestion on the need of Economics facilities in
schools.  Make the students aware of the
relation schools.  Make the students
aware of the relationship between teachers attitude and students academic
performance in Economics in secondary school certificate examinations to be
able to make necessary adjustment on their study habit.

Research Questions
As discussed earlier, the purpose of
this study is to investigate the relationship between teachers attitude and
students academic performance in Economics in senior secondary certificate
examination.  For this reason certain
questions must be asked to achieve the objectives to the study.
1)               
Does
academic achievement of students in economics have relationship with adequate
facilities in schools than those without adequate facilities?
2)               
What
is the relationship between teachers attitude and students academic performance
in economics in secondary school with economics teachers qualification?
3)               
What
relationship between teachers attitude to work have on students achievement in
economics?
4)               
Does
teachers attitude to administration have relationship on the students
performances in economics?

Research Hypotheses
In investigating the problems of this
study the following hypotheses were formulated and tested.
1)               
There
is no significant difference between the academic achievement of students in Economics
and school with adequate facilities
2)               
Students
performance in secondary school in Economics does not relate with economics
teachers qualifications?
3)               
There
is no significant relationship between the attitude the teachers attitude to
administration and student performances in Economics.

Scope of the Study
There are many environmental factors
which influence the performances of Economics students in secondary school
economics.  These include professionally
qualified and experience economics teachers, good equipment, adequate school
buildings and furniture good library administrative management, location of
home background e.g. economic status of the family.  All these variables cannot be treated in this
research because of the time limit nature of the study and availability of
resources, only the following factor would be dealt with such as professionally
qualified and experienced economics teacher good equipment in economics good
equipment in economics good administration management and teachers attitude to
work.

Definition of Terms
To remove ambiguity and
misconceptions of working terms which may be subjected to several
interpretation.  A precise operational
definitions of terms are given below as used in the study.
1)               
Economics: According to professor I. Robbing
“is the science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends
and scarce means which have alternative use”
Ends refers to human wants which are
so numerous that they are said to be insatiable.  For example a student needs, clothes books
shoes etc these needs are so many and unlimited scarce means.  Means that resource available for us to use
in satisfying our numerous wants but these resources or very scarce and are
never enough to satisfy more than a few needs at any given time e.g. money,
time, land etc.
2)               
Alternative Uses: The scarce available means or
resources have so many competing uses to which they could be put e.g. the
student who have some money has to choose between the payment of his school
fees and purchase of his textbooks
3)               
Statistics
is concerned with collecting organizing summarizing, presenting and analyzing
data
4)               
Table: A table shows the relationship
between two or more variables.  Table are
often used as a summary of events.
5)               
Attitude: According to Longman Dictionary
contemporary English “the opinions and feeling that someone usually has bout
something.
6)               
Environment
can be defined as all the situations, events, people etc that influence
learning.  A helpful, learning
environment are home, school, methodology, socio – economic background, status
of the family, cultural factors, school infrastructural facilities, the school
leadership pattern and peers influence.
7)               
Teaching
according to Van Dalen and Brittei (1959) is a means of guiding students
through planned activities so that they may acquire the richest learning
possible from their experience.
8)               
Learning
can be defined as relatively performance change in behaviour that occurs as a
result of previous experience.
9)               
Achievement
according to Longman dictionary something important that someone succeed in
doing by his/her own efforts.
