CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background to the study
          Various
forms of studies and observations have shown that no two persons are exactly
the same.  The ideal uniqueness of every
individual goes a long way in determining his philosophy and ideology of life
as district even slightly different from others.
          In
view of the above appreciable influence of the individuality of individuals, it
is therefore important to note that in most human dealings it is difficult if
not impossible to maintain this uniqueness.
          According
to Young (1942) “We are allagreed in recognizing the fact that the human being
lives not unto himself alone, but it at all times more or less under the
influence of some particular group of his fellows, be it family, plary group,
occupational, confraternity or some other sort”. With critical view of the
groups mentioned above one can vividly deduce that out of them the family plays
a leading role in exerting its impact on its members.
          The
choice of career being as essential aspect of one’s life has been discovered to
be made in relation to one’s family setting.
Today some choices are made after parents in terms of parental pressure
while some makes their choice through personal determination.  Some even choose theirs contrast to the
predominant occupation in the family in an attempt to take care of monotony and
bring into the family diverse forms of profession.  It is common in our society today that parent
(even illiterate) tends to indulge their children in such profession that they
are really interested in but unable to accomplish during their own time.
          Even
some people prefer to choose their own after some other important personality
in the family such as brothers, sisters, uncles and so on.  Occasionally, some choose their in
consideration of their own career independent of any career information form
the family most especially those from illiterates or poor homes.
Moreover, it is even clear today in
every nook and crannies of our society that some professions are more famous
and profitable than the others, even most children from influential and
literate homes seems to run after such professions as medicine, Engineering,
Law, Architecture, Accounting and so on.
In view of different forms of
observations it has been noticed that some children from illiterate and less
influential tends to pursue less incrative careers due to lack of career
information, models, financial constraints and some environmental factors.
Above all, in this study, much
emphasis would be land on finding out whether the family setting of a person
has influence on the career aspiration one hopes to pursue.  If it has then, what form of influence is it?
Are the influence favourable or unbearable to the children? Can a wrong choice
of career lead to career frustration.
Statement of the problem
This study is aimed at investigating
whether:
i.
The
kind of family one comes from determines one’s choice of profession.
ii.
Socio
– economic status of the family has impact on one’s choice of profession.
iii.
Parental
education influences one’s choice of profession.
iv.
Parental
personal occupational interest influence one’s choice of profession.
v.
Parental
occupation influences one’s choice of career.
vi.
Choice
of career occupation of other significant people influences one’s choice of
career.
vii.
One’s
intellectual ability determines one’s choice of career.
viii.
There
is no relationship between one’s family setting and his choice of career.
Research Hypothesis
          The
questions designed for this research are as follows:
1)
Is
there any significant difference between the type of family one comes from and
his choice of career?
2)
Is
there any significant difference between the family’s socio – economic status
and one’s choice of career?
3)
Is
there any significant difference between parental occupation and one’s choice
of profession?
4)
Is
there any significant difference between parental level of education and one’s
choice of profession?
5)
Is
there any difference between parental career preference and their offspring’s
choice of profession?
6)
Is
there any significant difference between the occupational preference of the
significant people and the adolescent’s choice of career?
7)
Is
there any difference between students’ intellectual abilities and their choice
of career?
Purpose of the study
          Essentially
the study would be geared toward identifying the basic relationship between
student’s family setting and his career aspiration with particular reference to
S.S. 3 students in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.
          The
study would also consider some of the factors that could determine one’s career
aspiration.
Significance of the study
          This
research is hearsay because some people or children tend to choose profession
that they are incapable to cope with or later develop hatred to such
professions, regarding themselves as misfits, thereby changing to another
occupation after some times of stay on such profession but really dissatisfied
and thereby being ineffective on such jobs or even unable to perform well on
the jobs.  This is due to the shallowness
of the reasons that drove them initially to such occupations, not self –
dependent and on the other hand, due to the inability of the persons to
discover themselves and this might be a life – long problem.
          It
is even noticed that some families influences the choice of profession their
offspring make.  Sometimes on sensible
grounds and may also be to satisfy their selfish interest.  This study tend  to find out whether there is relationship
between the family setting and the career the child hopes to pursue, if there
is, what type of relationship is it, whether it is worth while in order to
provide effective and efficient man power for the labour market so as to bring
about national development.
Scope of the study
          The
scope of this study is based on the fact that the researcher realizes that many
things can be studied as determining the choice of occupation students aspire
for but for the purpose of preciseness, emphasis would be laid on the family
setting.
Limitation of the study
          For
the essence of relevance. the study covers four selected secondary schools with
particular reference to S.S. 3 students in Akure South Local Government Area,
it is basic that these students are pursuing courses that could eventually lead
to the careers they hope to be attached with.
          The
fact is that, the researcher can not guarantee a sort of total reliability of
the piece of data to be provided by the students and as a result of this, he
will therefore make use of the information gathered the way they are.
