PROBLEM FACING TEACHING AND LEARNING HEALTH EDUCATION AMONG THE STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION

PROBLEM FACING  TEACHING AND LEARNING  HEALTH EDUCATION AMONG THE STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTION
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Health education is not evaluated in
terms of muscular or strength of physical size. The world health organization
(WHO 1947) see health as a state of complete physical, mental moral and social
well-being of an individual not merely in the absence of disease or infirmity.
According to Enoh (2001). health
education is seen and conceived as being that quality of physically mentally,
and emotionally vel1-being which enable individual to live more effectively and
enjoyable.
Teaching health education in colleges
is a critical element for the survival of human being and for the effective understanding
of a person’s immediate environment (Nayor, Kelly and Lewis, 2005) as man’s
contemporary world becomes more industrialized and complex. man and his
immediate eco-system is faced with various disease and degradation that only
clear understanding of how to maintain a healthy living can save us from
hazard.
          According
to Bucher (2000) health is a state in which all the body organ such as Brain,
heart, kidney, liver, etc. Are functioning properly effectively and support
each other in such a manner that the body appreciate as an integral whole in
order to achieve complete health. In the same vain, health education is the
provision of systematic educate. Programme for the developmental of desirable
habit, attitude on knowledge in relation to personal community and
environmental health, in essence health education could be referred to as
promotion and preservation of healthy living with respect to man his biological
environment and ecosystem Tunner (2009).
It is disheartening to note that in
spite of the government effort to make Nigeria free from health prob1ern
which can hinder the achievement of health or all by the year 2013. Health
education is still not well taught in our schools.
In some of our colleges. health
period are favour the time table. The acute neglect of health education became
more glaring. When one consider the omission curriculum health education f the
scheme of school curriculum modules prepared under. The auspices of national
implementation committee on national policy education the teaching of health
education is further reduce to nothing lacking into account some of the problem
facing it in school for example in some colleges it is handled by unqualified
lectures. Some lecture here no interest in the course. This lack of interest could
be traced to the fact that it is taught as a subject to physical education (Ogunleye,
2006).
The teaching of health education is
made and abstract subject that has no or little value at the environment of our
college for example most of our schools have no toilet facilities, and no e
water to drink. In same school the nutritional aspect is not even catered for.
Thus one discovers that the school that is supposed to be a specimen of an
ideal environment is not better than the homes.
Many people are not really interested
in the subject because what is taught does not have any coherence with what is
obtained in the real life. Health education is more valued when one consider
the adage which says “train a child in the way he should go and when grows he
will not live it”.
Studies by Eke (2001) and Idehen
(2004) revealed that in many part of Nigeria, health instruction in
college of education was poorly carried out. The non-implementation of the
instructional component of the health educational materials were mainly the
problems identified by the researcher as responsible for poor status of health
education in Nigeria
school system. It is significant to mention that in whatever function one find
oneself, the most important factor is good health. If health is lacking.
Productivity will be seriously under mined. Thus every health education teacher
in Nigeria
has the potential for positively affecting the health status of student
furthermore, student content with health problems influence their ability to
learn. For instance, some student are not adequately fed, other lack relevant
vaccination and are vulnerable to various infections and diseases such as
tuberculosis, measles, meningitis, malaria.
Studies by Ireson (2000) revealed
that many students are brought up in families in which domestic violence and
drug or chemical dependency are the. rule rather than the exception. These
observation compel and make necessary the provision and adequate implementation
of health education curriculum in schools.
Health education instructional
objective are expected to provide health knowledge, wellness behaviour, remote
health situations facilitate healthful relationships and enable student make
responsible decisions. An earlier report (Barnard 2006), on the objectives of
health instruction include that it can help learner to develop resistance
skills when appropriate. promote protective factors, ensure resilience in terms
of the ability to prevent or to recover from sickness and to promote health
literacy.
Studies by Dewson (2007) and Gold
(2009) revealed that significance of health instruction and they concluded that
health instruction is effective in reducing many high-risk behaviours, teenage
pregnancies smoking rate among young people, but its overall effectiveness
depends on many factors such as the quality of teachers providing health
instruction, the available instructional materials in terms of textbook,
pamphlet, posters and other available infrastructure facilities such as play
field, toilet, comprehensiveness of the health education programme, time available
for instruction family involvement and community participation in matter
related to heath education.
According to Makanjuola (2000). Health
education is defined as all those experience of an individual group of community
that influence belief, attitudes and behaviours with respect to health as well
as the process and effect of production change where necessary of optima
health.
Statement of the study
In spite of the several research that
have being carried out to examine the issue and problem pertaining teaching of
health education among student of the college of education, on have attempted
to address the role of school administrators, although shuck smith and wood
(2008), had earlier reported that administrative factors have little or
influence the teaching of health education in Nigerian colleges and to evaluate
the factors that influence the teaching of health education in Nigeria college.
It has been observed that there were no qualified health education lecturer to
teach health education as a course and this has been handled by other course
lecturer, instructional material were not made available in college of
education. Some of the lecturer cannot lay hand on relevant and current
textbook and instructional material. In most cases fund were not made available
for the implementation of health education programme in school by the
government.
