ABSTRACT
In Nigeria today
and in Oye Local Government of Ekiti State in particular, there is problem of
students roaming about the street, even in schools where guards are mounted,
the students are still found wandering aimlessly on the streets, this issue of
students leaving the school compound when they are expected to attend classes
had been giving a lot of concern to everybody in the society. This study aimed
at identifying the factors that could motivate students in schools and the
resultant academic performance of the students in schools and to make
recommendation for proper guidance and counseling of students at homes and in
schools.

research will be conducted in some schools, at least 6 schools and 9 schools at
most from Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

researcher made random sampling of some of the subjects offered in senior
secondary schools with particular reference to a class and also questionnaire
will be used for data collection. The findings were: majority of the students
sampled choose good moral performance of school in society as influencing
factors; that the use of instructional materials adequately motivate students
and improved their performance; that personal factors were the greatest factors
influencing motivation in schools; that the family influencing factors motivate
students to a considerable extent and improve academic performance. The
presence of age mates and attendance of siblings in school as motivational
ingredients for students and better academic performance of the students; the
extent to which the use of audio-visual aids influence students’ performance in
secondary schools.

socializing agency of a child. There, he acquires his first image and self, he
interacts with others and develops a concept of which he is, deduced from the
attitudes and behaviour of the people around him. How he accepts himself and
others is largely determined by his relationship with the people, places and
situations in his environment.

important agency for the transmission of the cultural heritage and providing
experiences that will lead him to become contributing member of the society. In
the school, he experiences group living, under the guidance of skilled teachers
who understand him and who help him actualize his maximum potentials. The
school must make clear what is expected of him and how to achieve the
expectations. Thus, he will learn to meet each situation in such a way that it
will have meaning to him. The curriculum, the educational experiences through
which schools seek to direct growth must be selected with reference to both the
present needs of the child and the demand of the society. In other words, the
school should provide the opportunity for the learner to best utilize his
preset motivation for growth towards the desired by the society.

to be declining and this is why our education system is now living in its
former glory. Those who are dedicated and focused might not have the

is an umbrella term that is used to explain circumstances, which enhance
initiation, maintenance and direction or human behaviour in the pursuit of a
