IMPLICATIONS OF BROKEN HOMES ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENTS IN BIOLOGY
ABSTRACT
          The study concerns implication of
broken homes on the achievement of secondary school students in their academic
work in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State. The study populations were
200 secondary teachers and 200 secondary school students.
The instrument used for the study is
questionnaires. The instrument were validated and found useful for eliciting
the necessary information from the sampled population. Information required
from the sampled population were based on pupils performance, mood, attendance
at school, sex among others. Percentage of scores and sample frequency counts
were employed in analyzing the data collected. The results of the study showed
that products of broken home are not always happy and they do not perform well
in school. Their relative poor achievement in their academic work was traced to
truancy among products of broken homes.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Over the years, the investigations of
the factors that influence academic achievement of students have attracted the
interest and concern of teachers, counselors, psychologists, researchers and
school administrators in Nigeria. This is because of the public out cries
concerning the low standard of education in the country. The declining quality
of education in the country and the breeding of graduates with little technical
know-how have resulted in serious setbacks to the industrial development of the
nation. Different factors are capable of influencing the academic achievement
of students in biology. Such factors may be the student internal state
(intelligence, state of health, motivation, anxiety etc.) and their environment
(availability of suitable learning environment, adequacy of educational
infrastructure like textbooks and well-equipped laboratories).
The cause of poor academic achievement
to a combination of personal and institutional factor personal factor relate to
the individual’s intelligence knowledge and ability. While institutional
factors are family or parental influences, social influences and school related
factors. Student/lecturer rapport, teacher related factors accommodation and
living conditions.
BACKGROUND
TO THE STUDY
“Marriage” is one of the most
prevalent social activities. Boys and girls grow up to become husband and
wives. In due course their offspring grow up to do the same because it is the
tradition of our fore-fathers. Marriage is thus one of the important steps of
human being in life. At marriage, life is supposed to be with bride and groom
and they are therefore described as being responsible.
Partners at marriage are supposed to
stay together “for better for worse” they are to stand side by side and share
each other’s burden and joy. This does not however hold for all marriages and
all times due to a number of conflicting interests and pressure.
Thus many homes are turned apart today
because couples are unable to manage the crisis resulting from conflicting
interest and economic hardships carefully. In many instances the children
become victims because their training in school could no longer be the joint
implications of both partners.
Broken family as one of the root cause
of indiscipline in the school has its own implication on the children’s
education.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
There is a growing act of
indiscipline, nowadays in our schools, as this wave of indiscipline is ravaging
all schools there is a declining standards of education. Attempts by concerned
people often belief that children from broken homes exhibit some acts of
indiscipline in the school. They are often caught in fighting, stealing and
truancy. Likewise those groups of children have low academic achievement in the
school.
These claim and beliefs have not been
exhausting and objectively investigated especially in the study area.
HYPOTHESES
In pursuit of the research problems
and to realize the objectives of the study, the following hypotheses were
raised and tested.
1.     There
is no significant difference between the academic performance of students from
single parent families and those from two parent families.
2.     There
is no significant difference between the academic achievement of male students
from single parent families and male students from two parent’s families.
3.     There
is no significant difference between the academic achievement of female
students from single parent families and female students from two parent
families
4.     There
is no significant different in the academic achievement of children from broken
homes and those from stable home.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The study looked in to the implication
of broken homes on pupils behavior and academic achievement in schools. The
purpose is to identify remote and immediate causes of acts of indiscipline and
antecedents of under achievement and low performance of students in our
schools.
The present study aims at identifying:
i.
Causes of broken homes in the study
area,
ii.
The implication of broken home on the
academic achievement of students from such homes.
iii.
Suggest measures to enhance discipline
and academic achievement of students in general and student from broken homes
in particular.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study is significant in the sense
that finding from it would serve as an evaluative procedure in the teaching
process. The study is equally significant because it focus on the problems
which parent caused for their children ignorantly. It is hoped however that the
suggested solutions to the problems would enhance discipline and academic
achievement of children in their schools.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The areas to be covered by the study
consist of pupils in Ifedore local government area of Ondo State.
The study concentrates on causes of
broken homes, implication of broken home on academic achievement of pupils in
the study area.
LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study is seriously handicapped by
inadequate funds and time. The study problem being a national one ought to have
been investigated in a wider area. It was however restricted to Ifedore local
government area due to the restrictive factors of poor finances and time
constraint.
          Likewise, poor transportation caused a
lot of problems of wide coverage consequently the result of this study could
only apply to the area of the study. More investigations on the study need to
be conducted in other areas before useful and reliable conclusions and
generalization can be made.
