The UK Department of Education has announced that non-UK citizens can now apply to become teachers in UK schools. Nigeria is among the countries whose citizens are eligible to apply for a qualified teacher status (QTS) through the Teaching Regulation Agency starting February 2023. To be considered, applicants must have at least two years of teaching experience, a bachelor’s degree from a UK or non-UK university, an English language proficiency equivalent to a grade 4 GCSE, a maths proficiency equivalent to a grade 4 GCSE for primary school teaching, and a science proficiency in physics, chemistry or biology equivalent to a grade 4 GCSE. No formal teacher training is required.

The UK government has introduced the International Qualified Teacher Status (iQTS), a new teaching qualification that is delivered online by English teacher training providers in collaboration with schools worldwide. iQTS meets the same standards as the UK’s QTS and leads to the automatic awarding of QTS. Non-UK citizens can apply for the qualification, which is currently available through six providers with plans to expand in September 2023. iQTS is the only international teacher training program that results in automatic award of QTS. To apply for QTS, a fee must be paid but no further training or visits to the UK are required.
