ABSTRACT
This
study was carried out to investigate the Factors affecting students’ academic
performance in Shorthand in College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti. In order to achieve this, five (5) specific
objectives were raised among which are: investigating the performance of students
studying shorthand in College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, determining and
finding out the factors affecting student’s academic performance in
Shorthand. As a guide for the
researcher, five (5) research questions were used, survey research design was
also used for the study. The population
of the study consisted of seventy-one (71) students in part III of Office
Technology Management (OTM) in College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti. From the population, fifty (50) students were
sampled using proportional random sampling technique. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for
collecting data from the respondents.
The data collected were then analyzed using frequency and
percentage. The study found out among
others that; lack of students’ interest, teacher’s incompetency, misinterpretation
of words are the major factors affecting students’ academic performance in
shorthand. Based on the findings, it was
concluded that poor enrolment of students in Shorthand will lead to
disengagement of shorthand teachers. In
view of the findings and conclusion, it was recommended among others that;
there is need for Shorthand students to be committed, serious and should not
entertain any fear so as to improve their performance in Shorthand. It was also recommended that students of
shorthand should have adequate interest in shorthand, memorize the principles
of shorthand and should daily and constantly practice Shorthand in order to
overcome the factors affecting students’ academic performance discussed in this
study.
