The
project was designed to study facilities required for teaching
Agricultural science in secondary schools in Ikere,Ise and Ado Local
Government Areas of Ekiti State. Six research questions guided the
study. The population comprised of ten (10) secondary school in local
government areas i.e Ado, Ikere and Ise. The study was carried out with a
well structured questionnaire copies of which were administered on
agricultural science teachers in the schools. Data collected were
analysed using single percentages. The following findings were made (1)
The Facilities available for teaching agricultural science in the school
include school farm, agricultural science laboratory, and qualified
agricultural science teachers. In addition, relevant text book, field
trips and farm practical were also used in teaching the subject. However
the schools had problem of inadequate qualified agricultural science
teachers, capital, land, farm implements and tools. It is support the
rewarded that government should support the schools with found to be
able to acquire the relevant facilities that are required for teaching
agricultural science. Competent agricultural science should also be
employed.
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Agriculture
is the first and most thriving occupation of mankind from its early
form of wild fruits, leaf, root, snail and insect gathering, fishing and
hunting to its present mechanized form.
Agriculture is derived
from the Latin word “agar” meaning field and culture meaning
cultivation. However, it is currently defined as the art and science of
crop and animal husbandry for the benefit of mankind.
Adekojo
(1998) defined agriculture as the cultivation and land for the purpose
of producing food for man, feed for animal and fibre for raw materials.
He further stated that, it include small scale industries connected with
processing of agricultural products. Therefore agriculture embrace crop
and animal production and processing. The meaning and importance of
agriculture have not changed as the source of foods and fibre. But
history science and skills of its performance have changed from place to
place and from time to time.
Agriculture is important to the
nation because it supplies country with wild range of food crops and
food of animal origin. It provides income to the farmers and it also a
source of foreign exchange earner, it provides food, clothing and
shelter for man. It supplies raw materials for industries. It creates
employment opportunities to the people in the country. Hence, there is
need to plan facilities for teaching agricultural science in secondary
schools.
Agriculture plays vital role in the Nigeria economy so
the government of the country. Hence, there is need to plan facilities
for teaching agricultural science in secondary schools.
Agriculture
plays vital role in the Nigeria economy so the government of the
country (Nigeria) attaches much priority to it. This is so as to provide
food to it. This is so as to provide food to its increasing population.
About 8% of Nigeria workers are engaged in farming. To the effect
agriculture is encouraged in all secondary schools. Both the federal and
the states government are devising means of improving the teaching of
agriculture as a subject in schools and colleges
Olaitan (1984)
recognized this fact. When he stated the objective of secondary schools
agricultural science some of these objectives include

  1. To provide students with adequate skill for living and progressively advance in farming.
  2. To
advance food production through improvement of agricultural production.
It is therefore very necessary to motivate students interest in term of
practical because the student are not interested with the practical
    aspect of agriculture.

It is of great importance to plan for the facilities required for teaching agricultural science in secondary schools.
Statement of the Problem
Facilities
play significant role in teaching process. Different concepts are
taught, they provide concrete experience to them. Also based on the
foregoing is realize that facilities and learners to comprehend what the
teacher teaches. They also make teachers’ lesson to be linely and make
for concrete provision of learning experiences, therefore, the study
will attempt to investigate and analyze the available facilities for
teaching agricultural science in selected secondary schools.
Purpose of the Study
The
main purpose of this study is determine the facilities required for
teaching agricultural science in secondary schools in Ikere, Ise and Ado
local Government areas, with the view of suggesting the best ways that
can be used to promote the teaching of agricultural science,
Specifically, the study sought to identify;

  1. Facilities required for teaching agricultural science in secondary schools
  2. The availability of the facilities in the facilities in schools
  3. The use of the available facilities
  4. Factors affecting the availability and use of the facilities
  5. Problems with the availability and use of the facilities
  6. Suggesting of improving the availability and use of the facilities.

Significance of the Study
The aim of the study is to enhance the availability and the use of facilities in the schools.
Research Questions
The following are the research questions to be answered in the study

  1. What are the facilities required for teaching agricultural science in secondary schools.
  2. What are the available facilities in the schools
  3. How are the available resources being used?
  4. What are the factors affecting the availability and use of the facilities
  5. What are the problem with availability and use of the facilities
  6. What are ways of improving the availability and use of the facilities.
