ABSTRACT
This study was intended to
analyse environmental influence on the teaching and learning of Business
studies in Junior Secondary School in Ado Local Government area of
Ekiti State as a case study. The problem of this study is to investigate
environmental factors that influence the teaching and learning of
business studies in Junior Secondary school in Ado Local Government area
of Ekiti State. To investigate the causes of disparity in the
performance in Business studies and the possible effect of environment
on performance of students in Business studies. The environments in
which the school is located is bound to have direct influence on the
learners. The findings were complied from responses to the questionnaire
distributed to students in three junior secondary school in Ado Local
Government of Ekiti State. The questionnaire was the primary instrument
used to elicit response from respondents. The data collected were
analysed and rating scale techniques. In conclusion, the study makes
some recommendations that the “Lion share” of parents’ hearings be
devoted towards the educational up bringing of their children instead of
accumulation of more wives, children and celebrations.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
In Nigeria educational system, less emphasis is paid to environment as a
major factor that has absolute control on the educational attainment of
the child. Environment plays a crucial role in the life of individual.
The level of education of the parent, occupation of parents, the
attitude of people to education are some of the factors that affect the
child at home which can make his progress in school, such as facilities /
instructional aids, teacher-student’s relationship, remuneration for
teacher to mention a few which are regarded as school environment
contribute in no small measure to the academic performance of a child.
A child who is endowed with intellectual potential without exposure to
comfortable and challenging environment, which can boost his natural
endowment is band to perform poorly in his academics. The poor
environment will affect him adversely. This argument is supported by
wise man (2009) when he opined that high innate intelligence coupled
with bad environment might produce poor educational attainment because
of lack of parental backing encouragement, poor motivation and so on.
However, if a child with lesser natural talent is brought up in a
challenging and conducive environment, all other things being equal, he
will perform well in his subjects in school.
Akinyemi
(2008) declared that among the Local Government in Ekiti State, Ado
Local Government is one of those whose performance in the junior
secondary school Examination in Business studies has attracted public
attention in terms of high rate of failure. He said that most of the
teachers posted to the local government do not stay in their stations to
deliver the goods to the student rather they engaged in businesses.
This is rampant in schools in the rural areas of the local government
where the effect of truancy on the part of the teachers is that, only a
few of them can boast of covering half of the topics specified in the
school syllabuses sent to schools by the examining body. But in the case
of urban areas nothing like that.
Since the final
examination is based on the syllabuses and not on the number of topics
treated in the syllabuses, there is bound to be mass failure. This
reason account for the mass failure in Business studies witnessed every
year the high failure rate in Business studies at the junior secondary
school certificate examination in the Local Government is alarming. The
situation has caught the attention of the researcher and made the
researcher to investigate the environment factors that influence in
teaching and learning of Business studies in Junior secondary schools
and the extent to which they are responsible for the performance of the
students in the Junior secondary certificate examination.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The performance of students in a school is not based on a single factor
but variety of factors much environment is among the major ones. Some
of those are: Family background, poverty level, teaching materials,
transportation, attitude of parents to teachers, location of the school
etc.
Adeyeye (2005) opined that the environment in which
students live and learn influences tremendously the degree of their
educational achievement.
The problem of this study is to
investigate environmental factors that influence the teaching and
learning of Business studies in Junior secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti
Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of this study is to look into the environmental factor as
it affect students’ performance in Business studies in Junior secondary
schools, using Ado Local Government as a case study.
- To examine the social economics status of parents affect the learning of Business studies.
- To investigate the availability of facilities and instructional equipment influence the teaching of Business studies
- To examine the parents level of education affect the students’ academic performance in Business studies
- To examine the teachers attitude to work influence the teaching of Business studies
- To examine the environment factors that affects students’ academic performance in Business studies.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
These are the questions that will help us guide the project work. There are as follows.
- Does the social economics status of parents affect the learning of Business studies in schools?
- Do the availability of facilities and instructional equipment influence the teaching of Business studies in schools?
- Does the parents level of education affect the students academic performance in business studies in schools?
- Does the teachers attitude to work influence the teaching of Business studies in schools?
- Does the environmental factors affects students’ academic performance in Business studies?
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study focused on Junior secondary Education in Ado Local
Government area of Ekiti State with particular reference to
environmental influence on the teaching and learning of Business
studies.
The environmental factors that relates to
teaching and learning of Business studies that were investigated were
social-economics status of parents and facilities/instructional
equipments in schools and location of school.
HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY
The following operational hypothesis were formulated for this study;
- There is no significant difference in the academic performance of the student in Business studies in urban and rural schools
- There is no significant difference in the academic performance of female student in Business studies in urban and rural schools
- There is no significant difference in the academic performance of male student in Business studies in urban and rural schools
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The importance of this research work cannot be over emphasized. This
project work would help to improve the performance of students in
Business studies in the Junior secondary school certificate Examination.
Furthermore, it would create awareness to the parents on the importance
of Business studies in the Junior secondary school curriculum. Parents
will become interested in the utility function of Business studies and
this will make them change the erroneous impression about business
studies.
Moreover, it will avail the policy makers the
opportunity of understanding areas where resources and attention should
be focused to raised the level of achievement and standard of education
in this area.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Some technical terms which features in this study are defined to aid readers’ understanding
Rural School:
A school located in a relatively homogenous small community were people
know each other i.e. under developed area. There are relatively few
numbers of industries and social amenities such as pipeborne water,
library, electricity etc.
Urban School: It refers to a
school sited in a large heterogeneous community or environment where
there are many social amenities and where there are fine structures of
schools that are build around the area.
Academic performance: It refers to the outcome of student learning experience quantifiable through continuous assessment and examination grading.
