AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF INDISCIPLINE IN SOME SELECTED PRIMARY SCHOOLS

AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF INDISCIPLINE IN SOME SELECTED PRIMARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effects of
indiscipline in some selected primary schools with Ado local government area of
Ekiti State.        Fifty (50) teachers
were used in the research and data collected through questionnaire. The
questionnaires were analyzed and interpreted using simple percentage. Based on
the result of the research, it was revealed that conflict
rules from parents particularly with regards to moral behaviour do affect
children at school,
therefore, whatever makes a child misbehave at
school can easily traceable to home, also, the type of environment in which the
child develop have a serious effect on their behaviour. On the basis of the
findings, it was recommended that both the home and school environment should
be made exciting and conducive for learning to the children, and other
educational requirement such as library, laboratory, workshop should be
provided and equipped by parents, teachers, government and all stakeholders in
education, also, parents should serve as good role models and great motivators
by showing good example for their children to follow. Lastly, pupils’ should be
taught on how to have good behaviour and respect by their parents.

INTRODUCTION
Background to the Study
In
the past, many Nigerians both literate and illiterate have been expressing
their opinion on the fall in the standard of education in schools.
There
have been various discussions on the subject and many factors have been
attributed to the fall in educational standard of pupils, and one of such
factors is indiscipline among pupils with the root firmly established in
primary schools.
Government
(both past and present) have promulgated various decrees against offences like
examination malpractice which includes cheating during examination, leakages of
examination papers, penalties as severe as twenty one years imprisonment has
been laid down by the provision of the decree against examination malpractice.
Indiscipline
among primary school pupils could be termed behavioural problems. Most of the
symptoms of behavioural problems are initially manifested by certain children
in their home environment. In support of this Baker (2010) started: ‘‘the
symptoms of conduct disorders most often start within the family groups’’. It
is very apparent that these problems are some of the factors that the child
brings into the schools mainly from their homes. This is not to say that
behavioural problem in some children may not start in the schools.
Even
when symptoms are manifested in such a setting, they are usually due to
difficulties within the family, thought, a few observational studies on
behavioural problems in children have been carried out; all have shown that
there is an increased prevalence of behavioural problems, within  the school in present day Nigeria (Nwagwu,
2008). There have been various Newspaper publications that came up with
screaming heading as: “falling moral standards, show of shame at the bar
beach’’ All these ought to give parents and guardians food for thought in the
upbringing of children
Moreover,
the nation faces problem of diverse complexity, which are political, economic,
social, educational and religious in nature. Most of these problems have their
root causes from our Institutions of learning. Some of these problems that have
been recently identified, such as the case of some demonstrations by pupils
which led to it destruction of properties worth thousands of naira. In fact in
1978 during the student riot that cut across the three levels (primary,
secondary and tertiary institutions) several lives and properties were lost.
Furthermore,
there have been cases whereby pupils beat up their head teachers and some
members of staff. All the acts of anti-social behaviours like stealing,
vandalism, truancy, bullying, lying, disobedience, are continually on the
increase and causing concern in the society.
If
children with behavioural problems today are not properly identified, diagnosed
and treated by specialists, they would be juvenile delinquent adolescents of
tomorrow and eventually maladjusted adults in the society. In recognition of
this obvious fact the Federal Military Government of Nigeria in 1984 launched
“the war against indiscipline’’. But for this and related measure to be of any
effect and success, there is a need to identify the causes of behavioural
problems among Nigeria children, and this would ultimately be beneficial to the
entire society.
This
study is aimed at examination of the nature and effect of occurrence and
re-occurrence of the offences which promote indiscipline in the primary schools
and suggest possible solutions to the problems. For this purpose such
disciplinary problems as truancy, disobedience, dishonesty and examination
malpractice shall be considered.
Purpose of the Study
The
study is aimed at examining the nature and effect of occurrence and
re-occurrence of the offences which promote indiscipline in the primary schools
under the study. The major offences studied include truancy, disobedience,
dishonest and examination malpractice. The study will also find out effects of
these offences on the overall tone of the school and how these offences
constitute a clog in wheel of school administration and academic performance of
the pupils. Possible suggestions will be made on how the occurrence and
re-occurrence of these offences can be prevented or reduced in the school.
Since schools form part of our recommendation this study will to a large extent
help in curbing acts of indiscipline in our everyday lives.
Significance of the
Study
It
is not an understatement that the bulk of our schools life and the society
itself are enmeshed in indiscipline. Indiscipline, which is a state of
disregard for laid down rules and regulations, continues to manifest itself in
every aspect of life. That some issues still remain unsolved, indiscipline also
embraces lack of the following:-
Respect
of the tasks of learning, Control of emotions, cultural traditional and
religious values, Training of mind and body to inculcate obedience, and other
virtues that contribute to and make for peaceful, conducive, productive,
progressive and happy life. These acts of indiscipline continue to manifest in
our society even by those who are adults. These acts of indiscipline have been
very difficult to eradicate in our schools and even in the society.  It follows naturally, therefore, that this
certain issues, are either still unresolved or yet to be discovered. It is
hoped that this work will produce positive contribution in detecting those
hidden issues and making appropriate recommendations to prevent its
magnification or to eradicate its causes.
Statement
of the Problem
This
research work aims at finding solution to the following problems.
(i)    That
a pupil family set-up may be a significant factor in the act of indiscipline.
(ii)   That acts of indiscipline such as truancy, disobedience and
examination malpractice affects the overall tone of the school
(iii)  That a particular act of indiscipline constitutes a threat to
school administration more than other acts of indiscipline.
(iv)  That a good school set-up helps to eliminate or reduce the act of
indiscipline in such school
Research Questions
This
study is designed to provide answer to the following questions
1.     Do
parents influence the attitude or behaviour of their wards at home?
2.     Does

Malpractice affect the overall tone of the school?
3.     Does
a good school set-up help to eliminate or reduce the act of indiscipline in
schools?
Scope and
Limitation of the Study
  Due to time
factor, the research is limited to Ado local government area of Ekiti State.
  Some primary
schools were selected in Ado Local Government area of Ekiti State. Also the
research work is limited to information collected from the questionnaires with
the belief that such information is as accurate as possible within human error
of judgement in the selected schools.
